WUWF Public Media in Pensacola, Fl is currently accepting applications for the full-time position of Managing Editor of News (Assistant Director – 125630). This position, which will report to the Director of Content & Operations, will be responsible for editing, assigning, scheduling and managing WUWF news efforts on air, and online, in conjunction with WUWF news staff, WUWF Digital Content producers and CREO (Center for Research & Economic Opportunity) writers & producers.
Minimum qualifications: Master’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience: or a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and four years of appropriate experience.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Working knowledge of public radio best practices for hosting & reporting
- Knowledge of applicable FCC rules pertaining to relevant materials aired
- Ability to write, edit, produce & report stories in the “public radio” style
- Excellent organizational and supervisory skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks & people, while setting & meeting deadlines
- Clear and engaging speaking voice
- Familiarity with online content posting, writing and visual content needs

Working with the Director of Content & Operations and the Executive Director, the Managing Editor (ME) will determine areas & topics on which to focus news efforts, with an eye towards issues and ideas relevant to the public radio audience, the community, and the Gulf Coast region. Specifically, story focus should include...
1) Focusing on “Enterprise” long form stories with the public radio audience in mind.
2) Focusing stories on “issues” not “incidents” – the “why’s” of what is happening, and how events will affect our community.
3) Establishing a story channel, of how work will get from the reporter’s idea for a story, to air/online.
4) Active involvement by the Managing Editor, assigning stories, establishing deadlines and serving as quality control for all local work created.
5) Creating a consistent way of incorporating CREO stories, staff and ideas, and a more complete blending of their talents with WUWF reporters and staff.

The Managing Editor will work closely with the WUWF Community Engagement Manager, making sure that formatting for the web is kept in mind when reporters are submitting content for online publication. They may also discuss story possibilities that live exclusively on line, or exist in longer form online.
Managing Editor Duties
The Managing Editor will have the following duties
1) Oversee quality and content of WUWF on air news offerings, serving as gate keeper and “final say” over what leads become stories, what stories are used on air, or online.
2) Work with WUWF Community Engagement Manager to oversee quality & content on line
3) Serve as story assignment editor
4) Serve as liaison to CREO reporters & staff (with respect to WUWF news offerings)
5) Serve as editor for stories produced by WUWF/CREO staff (or, serve as the person who assigns editors to WUWF/CREO staff)
6) Design and implement story editing process, quality standards, story priorities and other aspects related to allocation of story production and priority
7) Stress the importance of creating content that meets the needs of the public radio audience, focusing stories and content on issues important to listeners & the community, rather than news focused on sensational or visceral content.
8) Develop and implement the editorial focus, design & execute all aspects of the editorial process.
9) Develop a content and distribution strategy to include broadcast, online, social media and community engagement
10) Set measureable goals for each member of the team and hold team members accountable
11) Demonstrate sound news judgement, the highest journalistic ethics and an understanding of the sound and role of public media
Additionally, the ME will be expected to lead by example, creating stories and content for WUWF FM & WUWF.org on a regular basis.
Also, this position, while not being assigned a daily air shift, will be expected to fill in for the “Morning Edition” & All Things Considered” host when regular hosts are on vacation, or cannot work due to illness, the need to cover a story, etc. This portion of the job requires knowledge and awareness of Public Radio programming and values; working knowledge of digital production techniques and software; news production skills, good on air skills and the ability to complete assignments. Reliability, clarity in speaking and writing, team player mentality. Experience with on air fund raising & membership campaigns.
