KQED Seeks Health Editor

Position Summary:     

The Health Editor is an experienced journalist responsible for writing and editing stories for KQED's health beat, including for local radio and digital news, spot reporting, feature reporting, contributing to the California Report and managing the State of Health blog. 

 The three person health reporting team covers topics including health policy, public health and health disparities with a focus on the Bay Area and California news. The Health Editor has responsibility for researching and writing stories for State of Health, editing a staff of two reporters for radio, digital and social distribution, managing partnerships with freelancers and other organizations that share stories with KQED and coordinating coverage with other KQED editors and senior staff. The Editor will also work with the radio newsroom and will edit stories for air. He or she may also report short pieces for KQED Public Radio and/or KQED's statewide radio service The California Report, and appear on KQED Newsroom.

Essential Functions:

  • Edit State of Health blog, which is updated daily, including writing, commissioning, curating and editing posts
  • Write original and compelling health stories that inform and engage our audience; write headlines and select photos to accompany stories
  • Identify and explain news and trends in California health policy and public health
  • Work closely with other KQED staff on health beat; edit and produce their stories for engaging presentation on State of Health, including implementing all aspects of the production process (adding photos, video, audio, etc.)
  • Manage team of two reporters, plus freelance and other contributors
  • Report with a casual but informed voice, with an eye toward needs and interests of consumers, patients, providers and caregivers
  • Write copy and headlines that appeal to web readers, search engines and social media
  • Contribute to KQED News social accounts to engage a broader audience, updating multiple times daily with KQED stories and relevant content from our partners
  • Work closely with the KQED online news team and KQED Public Radio News to provide editorial and news input on a daily basis
  • Edit radio health news stories, both feature and spot news
  • Occasionally appear on KQED TV, reporting on health beat

Knowledge/Experience Required:

  • Minimum of five years experience reporting on health, ideally in California
  • Clear understanding of broad health issues: from policy to public health to disparities
  • Audio reporting expertise; Audio editing experience desired
  • Excellent news judgment
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure
  • Excellent writing and editing skills and proven ability to do both, often with little supervision, including headline writing, copy-editing, and photo captions
  • Demonstrated ability to manage editorial calendar
  • Experience with social media and web distribution
  • Thorough knowledge of journalistic principles, ethics and standards
  • Capacity to work both completely independently and as part of a broader team, as the job demands

Knowledge/Experience Desired:

  • Knowledge of AP style
  • Experience or knowledge of sound editing and audio production techniques
  • Experience or knowledge with WordPress
  • B.A. degree in journalism, broadcast or public health desired
  • Photography skills
  • Fluency in Spanish desired
  • Fluency in Chinese languages a plus
