The Community Idea Stations is seeking a Legal Reporter for our FM station 88.9 WCVE. This is a full time position with benefits and reports to the News Director.
This reporter will cover major cases in criminal, civil and constitutional courts. This position will be responsible for covering the Supreme Court of Virginia, the U.S. 4th District Court of Appeals (Virginia, D.C. Maryland, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina), U.S. Eastern District Court, local district courts and local police departments. This position will also cover state criminal justice policy including the Virginia Crime Commission and the House and Senate Court’s of Justice Committees. This position will also participate in peer editing of other reporter’s work.
Candidates should be willing to work as needed during day and evening hours. This position may also host occasional news programs as needed. Weekend hours and overtime will be periodically required. During the Virginia General Assembly session, this position may require significant overtime.
The successful candidate will have court-reporting experience. Some law school is preferred. Candidates should be proficient in Adobe Audition and have web and social media‐based editing and production skills. Two to three years of experience as an on‐air reporter is required and public radio experience is strongly preferred. Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license and have the ability to travel.
